DREADMOOR The Throat Guide – Generator, Water Wheels & Gate Puzzle
Last updated: 2026-11-03 · Verified against game version Demo (Oct 2026)
How to open the gate at The Throat in DREADMOOR: fuel the generator, install the Thermal Coil, Gear and both Buckets, repair the Water Pump, and route water to both wheels.

Quick Guide — Key Takeaways
- Start the Generator first — a Fuel Can is in the nearby working area, not back at the Trading Post.
- The gate needs four machinery repairs: Thermal Coil, Gear, two Buckets and the Water Pump.
- Repair the Water Pump in place — do not craft a replacement at John's Lathe.
- Route water to BOTH wheels with the flow controls and blue pivots; one turning wheel is not enough.
- Read the journal wording: 'repair machinery' means parts; 'configure water flow' means the channel controls.
The Throat is the gate out of the demo region — and the puzzle that stalls most captains. Here is the full sequence, with the checks that matter when the gate refuses to move. Prerequisites: Hull Protection and the Upgraded Engine installed.
Step 1: Fuel and Start the Generator
Dock at The Throat and find the Generator. It needs fuel, but you do not sail back for it — search the nearby working area for a Fuel Can, refuel and start the generator. Try the Gate Control: the gate fails, and the objective changes to repairing the waterway machinery.
Step 2: The Four Machinery Repairs
- Thermal Coil — install it in the damaged electrical assembly.
- Gear — install the replacement gear in the designated gear slot.
- Buckets ×2 — install one in each water-wheel mounting point. One bucket is not enough, and this is the most commonly missed part.
- Water Pump — repair it in place. Do not craft a replacement at John's Lathe; the objective tracks the on-site repair.
Step 3: Route Water to Both Wheels
Use the four water-flow controls and the glowing blue pivots to route water through the channels. The Hook Gun pulls the pivots that move the planks. The goal is flow to both wheels — wait until both are visibly turning.
Step 4: Open the Gate
Return to the Gate Control and open the passage. Board the boat, follow the opened route and sail until the Thank You for Playing screen appears — that is the end of the October 2026 demo.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Gate Control does nothing | Generator not fueled or not started |
| "Repair machinery" objective stuck | Missing Thermal Coil, Gear, a Bucket, or the in-place pump repair |
| One wheel turning | Second Bucket missing, or flow not routed to the second wheel |
| "Configure water flow" stuck | Channel controls and pivots — not a generator problem |
| Pump repaired but objective unchanged | A replacement was crafted instead of repairing the pump in place |
FAQ
Why won't the gate at The Throat open?
One of the four machinery repairs is missing — Thermal Coil, Gear, a Bucket (you need both) or the in-place Water Pump repair — or the water is not routed to both wheels yet.
Where is the fuel for the generator at The Throat?
Search the working area around the generator for a Fuel Can. You do not need to sail back for fuel.
Do I need to craft a new Water Pump?
No. The Water Pump is repaired in place at The Throat. Crafting a replacement at the Lathe is a wasted trip.
Only one water wheel is turning. What did I miss?
The second wheel is missing its Bucket, or the water-flow channels are not routed to it. Both wheels must turn before the Gate Control responds.
